  • Our Covid protocols require no more than 10 students in a group so spaces for each date are limited.  

  • Face masks must be worn by staff and volunteers at all times. 

  • These opportunities take place outdoors, and off-trail, so sturdy footwear and weather appropriate clothing are strongly recommended!

Long Branch Creek Cleanup

We're going creekin'! Help us clean up the Long Branch creek by removing all kinds of garage that has ventured downstream. This will be a one day event split into two sessions. Feel free to sign up for both sessions and stay all day.

Wetlands Monitoring

On the northwest side of the Rowe Woods property, way off the beaten path, there is a wetland that was built because a nearby company developed on an existing wetland. This wetland was built years ago and was meant to replace the original one.

We will be exploring the wetland's history as well as its current health by examining what organisms are present.

Community Science: Monarchs

Cincinnati Nature Center is part of a larger community science project devoted to studying monarch butterflies. Join us for a training session about monarchs and how to collect data on our assigned milkweed patch. These sessions will make you eligible to earn additional service hours through the beginning of summer.

Come have some fun in the sun and help the nature center shine a little bit more. We'll be spending the day with our Equipment Coordinator, Josh Matheson, learning about different types of equipment and giving them a good scrub.

Species Crawl

Cincinnati Nature Center is currently seeking an Arboretum status! We need help identifying trees and shrubs around the forest. Build your plant ID skills and help us build a digital archive of plants around the woods.

Mapping Days

With over 1,000 acres of land, it is difficult to decide where to focus our conservation efforts. The youth volunteers will be the first to work on surveying different invasive species all around our Rowe Woods property. We'll get a feel for ArcGIS data collection and this will be used by our conservation team in their invasive removal goals.

Maple Science

During maple season we will be continuing our community science project aimed at determining the age and health of the maple trees around the woods. Come do some cold weather hiking and practice good data taking techniques!

Willow Work


A prominent feature in our Playscape area is the Willow Tree Tunnel. Each year we maintenance this tunnel but this year we will be working to expand and build! Come learn about living willow structures and help plant the beginning stages of a willow house.

Trail Team Orientation

Last year, three youth volunteers, Abby Riddle, Pierce Bruner, and Ben Werdmann, helped develop the program that came to be called Trail Team. Trail Team is a ranger lite program designed around engaging guests in a casual and fun way. 

Members of Trail Team will learn how to assist guests with dipping in Matt's Pond as a main portion of the job, but your other duties might change depending on the day you are working.

Visitor Experience Manager, Anne Robinson, and I will be hosting an orientation for this program in June. The orientation will be required to participate in Trail Team. Volunteers must be at least 15 years old.

Herb Wall - Gardening and Landscape Work

The historic Herb Wall garden needs some young green thumbs to help maintain, weed, water, and maintain the restoration work done over the past couple decades. Each Tuesday in the summer, we will meet with Jan Doherty to learn a little more about the restoration work she has done and then we'll get our hands dirty in the garden.


Watering opportunities will be available for you to earn hours on your own time.

OFFSITE - Gorman Heritage Farm

Once a month I will be gathering a group to go to Gorman Heritage Farm to work on their Habitat Restoration program. One of their lovely staff members will show us the ropes!


If you decide you like the work, you can speak with their Volunteer Manager to official get on their team.

The Herbarium Project

The youth volunteer team will be helping build a herbarium for research purposes at CNC. Herbariums are basically a library of plants that can be found in a specific location.


We are going to be picking flowers/plants from around the woods and mounting them in a way so that all parts of the plant are visible. The picture is an example of what we will be doing. It's more of an art than a science.


The days will be split between collecting plants, mounting plants, and identifying plants.
